Taiwan : group seeks record damages in food scandal

Taiwans Consumers Foundation said Friday it had launched a group lawsuit seeking a record Tw$7.8 billion ($260 million) in damages from companies for selling food and drink items containing banned chemicals.

The group said it filed the suit on behalf of 568 people against leading food producer Uni-President Enterprises and 38 other firms for allegedly using banned chemicals over a period of several years in food and drink products.

The foundation accused the companies of violating the civic code by selling flawed goods, as well as breaking the consumer protection law by failing to ensure the safety of their products, it said in a statement.

Taiwans government last year tightened the law on tainted food after various items were found to contain banned chemicals, which experts say can cause hormone problems in children.

The incident prompted a major recall of sports drinks, juice and other products in Taiwan, while China, South Korea, the Philippines and Hong Kong temporarily banned imports of certain food and drinks from the island.  Uni-President declined to comment on the case.

Experts warn about flood insurance becoming unavailable to many in just four months

Businesses and homeowners seeking flood insurance could face greater uncertainty and prohibitively expensive insurance premiums in just four months’ time, experts will warn today.

The British Property Federation has called for urgent action to create a new settlement between Government and insurers, warning that the end of an agreement that guarantees near universal provision of flood cover could leave around 200,000 homes in high flood risk areas uninsurable and leave homeowners and thousands of businesses facing unaffordable bills.

The existing ABI/Government Statement of Principles between Government and the Association of British Insurers is due to end in June 2013, without any sign of a suitable alternative. T

Income protection is a vital component says Jelf Employee Benefits

Many employers are not offering one of the most important benefits to protect their employees and their families according to research conducted by Jelf Employee Benefits.

Nearly 3 out of 4 respondents (74%) indicated that Income Protection insurance was of greater importance to their workforce than Life Assurance cover.  Yet the majority of employers offer life cover as standard, with Income Protection coverage a very long way behind.

Income Protection is a vital insurance for employees, as it offers a continuation of the employee’s income should the employee be off work long-term through illness or injury.  Whilst this has always been of value, this is now ever more important as new legislation creates further barriers to the long term sick claiming state benefits.

Commenting on the findings, Steve Herbert, head of benefits strategy for Jelf Employee Benefits said:

“It’s clear from our research that employers accept that Income Protection cover is the most relevant employee benefit for their workforce.  Despite this fact, less than half of companies (47%) offer this benefit currently.

“Conversely, we found that life assurance was a benefit on offer via a much larger number of employers (82%), even though employees are some three times more likely to be off work with a long-term illness than die.  This is a strange mismatch, and one that employer’s really should seek to address.

“What’s more, even where an Income Protection policy has been put in place by an employer, it often only covers senior employees.  It’s generally accepted by the industry that only 1 in 10 private sector employees are actually covered by an Income Protection policy.”

Social demographics have moved on, people are living longer, and many illnesses are now treatable that haven’t been in the past.  As a result Income Protection may now be more relevant than previously, and Jelf Employee Benefits is advising employers to bring their benefits up to date to reflect the changing needs of their workforce.

Income Protection is a key benefit, as without continued income, an ill employee will often struggle to meet their financial commitments, thus adding financial problems and related stresses to the existing medical issues.  This can be devastating for the wellbeing of the employee and their family.

In conclusion Herbert said:

“There is a lack of understanding among both employers and employees in terms of what Income Protection actually involves, and the important benefits it can offer.  In our view it is a vital component of a benefits package for the 21st century, and is one of the most important benefits an employer can offer.

“We believe that employers may be failing their employees by not offering it.”

BIBA’s Eric Galbraith calls for better regulation and for government not to tax protection

The British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) has set out its Budget priorities to recognise the importance of risk management and insurance protection to assist growth and business resilience.

In its submission to the Chancellor, Eric Galbraith, BIBA’s Chief Executive highlighted the value of general insurance brokers in helping both individuals and businesses protect themselves through good risk management and insurance protection.

Galbraith stated that this value is being eroded through inappropriate, disproportionate and costly regulation which impacts both the general insurance broker and their customer. On
